Mysteries of the Seed

Birds don’t just disperse plant seeds by eating the fruit, they also carry seeds long distances on their bodies.

Small or barbed seeds can get stuck to birds’ feet and feathers. Granivores such as Jays have seed stocks that if not wholly eaten end up germinating into new plants.

On my patio in Syracuse, NY.

The complex community properties of seed dispersal both inter- intraspecies highlights the random element of community ecology; as it is these chaotic, reoccurring yet seemingly un-programmable patterns that dictate the stage upon which selection and adaptation play.
